Hi there.
Summary:
We have some news. Look like the baby is coming soon, like in the next few days soon. The evidence suggests induction may be necessary. Currently, Lara and the baby are fine. We will make a decision about how to proceed in the next few hours.
Details:
We had a sonogram test today where the doctors measured the baby’s progress. We learned that while his amniotic fluid level is good, his overall growth has slowed. He now sits in the 3rd percentile, 4 lbs, down from the 16th percentile a few weeks ago. This is a area of concern. Equally concerning is evidence that while umbilical cord blood volume is normal, the Doppler imaging indicates that more of that blood is being diverted or shunted to the baby’s brain.
This shunting of blood directs more oxygen to the brain but takes it away from other parts of the babies body, possibly contributing to a lower weight.
The medical team, after reviewing the cumulative data, recommend that we consider induction. That process could start soon, depending on certain factors. The induction can lead to a vagina or Cesarean birth, depending on several factors.
We have consulted with Lara’s brother, an experienced doctor, and the midwifes who would partner with the physicians to provide delivery care. We have also met with Neonatal Intensive Care Unit doctors to better understand what care the baby would receive after birth, the likely duration of his stay, our ability to visit, and the criteria for his discharge.
All that to say, the next few days and weeks will be challenging, but he appears to be in excellent hands.
While in the womb, he appears to be an active and pugnacious person, arguing with the sonogram and moving his hands about like a typical Philadelphian. Lara and I are in good spirits and hope to be good parents. We expect to give him the hospital bill upon high school graduation.
Thanks for your support.
