Delivery Week - Part 2

Medical Procedural Drama

For the last few weeks after birth, Lara has felt queasy, nauseous, and otherwise bad. March 15th, she went to the hospital emergency room and confirm that she has products of conception remaining in her uterus.

At the time of this posting, Lara is in a packed waiting room that “reeks of weed and cigarettes” to undergo a procedure called Dilation and curettage or D&C. According to the Cleveland Clinic website, D&C is a minor surgical procedure to remove the contents of the uterus. The provider dilates (opens) her cervix and uses a curette (small surgical tool) or suction to remove tissue.

The image above from the Mayo Clinic illustrates the procedure, which is typically done under anesthesia. Basically, a series of rods are inserted into the cervix to create an opening large enough to insert a sharp spoon like suction tool into the uterus that removes any remaining tissue.

Fun times.

Depending on what they find, recovery time can be a few days, although she should be discharged today.
